who should play in the bcs championship?

while the bcs has caused a great deal of turmoil and provided lou holtz and mark may (and now even jimmy johnson and barry switzer are getting a shot at it on nfl post game shows) with enough ammo to make them sound like greater idiots than they actually are, it is beyond surprising that nobody is mentioning the fact that the florida gators have absolutely no business playing in the national championship game, should they find their way past alabama in the sec championship.

all of the discussion about the big 12 south is warranted, there are three teams that have done nothing but put up huge numbers and only fall to the best competition in the country either away from home or on a neutral field. florida, however, has played well recently in the swamp against the likes of the citadel (give me a break) and florida state (garbage) in tallahassee, though their loss in gainsville to old miss at the end of september has been all but forgotten. don't for a second think that their wins over lsu or georgia mean anything, both of those teams showed what they are all about down the stretch. georgia bent over for alabama and georgia tech and as for lsu... well, a come from behind victory over troy at death valley? one doesn't even need to mention the meltdown losses to poor opponents.

should florida find their way past alabama (unlikely, none of the florida players have ever seen a defensive line that plays with the speed and strength of an nfl team), it would be an absolute shame that they play in the national championship instead of texas, texas tech or even usc - oregon state is clearly a more formidable opponent that mississippi, east coast bias aside. oklahoma is all but in, missouri will put up a fight for at most the first half in kansas city, but nothing more. if anyone thinks that oklahoma doesn't belong then they haven't been watching one of the most exciting seasons of college football in recent memory, if the sooners play alabama for the championship, everyone will have to hear that terribly obnoxious boomer sooner fight song many more times in an oklahoma upset over the crimson tide. with that being said, it should not be overlooked that the texas v. texas tech game this year was an instant classic, bar none, as was the red river shootout.

i just hope that florida doesn't stumble in to the championship game over texas or texas tech because of their awesome performances over the citadel and fsu at the end of the season and a loss to a decent ole miss sqaud. if florida is in the conversation after a loss to ole miss, then why isn't usc in the picture after a comparable early season loss to oregon state - at least usc got beat in corvallis.
